You don't need to. I do sometimes with my chi. You could use a product that will protect your hair from heat damage though. Of course, its optional.

i usually don't.. i though that was the purpose of using the chi... instead of some cheap hair straighter

you don't have to but to keep your hair from getting fried you should use a straightening spray. chi makes a spray you can buy.
